Tony Cousins returns to management as Shamrock Rovers' under-17 boss

Shamrock Rovers have appointed Tony Cousins as head coach for their under-17 national league team for the 2019 season.

The 49-year-old replaces Stephen Rice, who led the Tallaght club to a league semi-final this year after topping the southern elite division during the regular season.

Dubliner Cousins returns to the Hoops 16 years after he brought to an end a six-year spell with the club as a player.

He also spent a period in charge of Rovers' under-21s, and as senior assistant to Liam Buckley, in 2003.

The former Liverpool, Middlesbrough, Dundalk and Bohemians frontman made 145 appearances for the Hoops, scoring 46 times.

Cousins most recently spent seven years in charge of Longford Town, helping the midlands club to the First Division title in 2014 – the club’s first-ever league title.

He was previously in charge at Galway United between 2006 and 2008, and had a short spell in charge of Kildare County before taking over at City Calling Stadium.

The club will make further announcements on the coaching staff for their underage sides in due course, with vacancies currently in the under-13s and under-15s following Damien Duff’s departure.
