Luka Modric named FIFA Best Men's Player while Marta scoops women's award

Luka Modric's all-conquering season has seen him named FIFA's Best Men's Player at the annual awards ceremony in London.

The midfielder beat competition from Portugal and Juventus striker Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool and Egypt's Mo Salah to take home the gong.

Ronaldo won the award the past two seasons but, despite the absence of Lionel Messi from the shortlist, he couldn't make it three in a row.

Modric captained Croatia to the World Cup final in Russia this summer and finished with the Golden Ball for the tournament's outstanding player.

The 33-year-old was also an integral part, alongside fellow nominee Ronaldo, of the Real Madrid side that sealed a third consecutive Champions League crown in May.

Brazilian midfielder Marta of Orlando Pride was named Best Women's Player after she saw off the challenge of Norway's Ada Hederberg and Dzsenifer Marozsán, both of whom play with Lyon.

Salah's consolation prize for missing out on the top award was the Puskas Award for his strike for Liverpool in the Merseyside derby with Everton.

World Cup winner Didier Deschamps was Best Men's Coach, Reynald Pedros of Lyon was Best Women's Coach, while Thibaut Courtois was named Best Goalkeeper.

Much of the pre-awards talk surrounded the omission of Messi from the shortlist for Best Men's Player the first time in 12 years.

The Barcelona man did make the team of the year, however, alongside Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos and Kylian Mbappé.
