Harry Arter omitted from Ireland squad following rumours of bust-up with Roy Keane

Harry Arter has been omitted from the Republic of Ireland squad to face Wales and Poland this month following rumours of a falling-out with assistant manager Roy Keane.

The Cardiff City midfielder had been named in the 32-man provisional panel but was absent from the slimmed-down 26-strong squad named today.

Manager Martin O’Neill confirmed in a media interview last week that an altercation had taken place but there has been no comment since.

“I’m not denying there hasn’t been altercations,” O’Neill said in an interview with The Daily Mirror. “But the situation has definitely been defused and it’s just part of things.”

An FAI press release confirmed that Shane Long (foot), Sean Maguire (hamstring), Robbie Brady (ankle), Scott Hogan (groin) and James McCarthy (leg) all miss out with injury.

And Manchester United goalkeeper Kieran O’Hara will link up with the under-21 squad that faces Kosovo and Germany in crucial European Championship qualifiers.

That could mean a debut for Norwegian-born keeper Sean McDermott of Kristiansund, who has been called up to his first squad, as well as Preston striker Callum Robinson.
