FAI Cup First Round Review: Rovers' wait goes on while Bray are also first-day casualties

Shamrock Rovers' 31-year hunt for FAI Cup success will go on for at least another year as they were the high-profile casulaties on the first night of cup action.

The Hoops went down to a 1-0 defeat to First Division Drogheda United at United Park thanks to a first-half penalty from former Rovers striker Chris Lyons.

Lee Grace was shown a straight red card for a foul on William Hondermarck in the box midway through the first period, and they were served a double-whammy as Lyons netted from 12 yards.

Bray Wanderers were the second Premier Division side to go out to second-tier opposition as Finn Harps came from behind to claim a 3-1 victory after extra time.

Ger Pender got to the Gary Cronin era off to a flyer as he gave the Seagulls an early lead but Sam Todd equalised, before Mikey Place and Jacob Borg added two more in extra time.

Dundalk ensured there would be no repeat of Monday's EA Sports Cup semi-final defeat to Cobh Ramblers as they claimed their first win over the Rams in 12 years at Oriel Park.

A brace from Ronan Murray either side of Jamie McGrath's second-half strike ensured a brave Rams side wouldn't repeat their cup triumph.

Bohemians ran out comfortable 7-0 winners away to Wexford with six different players getting their names on the scoresheet.

JJ Lunney opened the scoring after just four minutes and goals from Dinny Corcoran, Daniel Kelly and Keith Ward left the score 4-0 at the break.

Corcoran added his second after the break before substitutes Eoghan Stokes and Cristian Magerusan completed the rout late on.

Shelbourne gradually wore down a stubborn Athlone Town outfit to win 4-0 at Tolka Park, Nika Kalandarishvili's own goal just before half time setting Owen Heary's side on their way.

Paddy Kavanagh, Greg Moorhouse and Lorcan Fitzgerald added to the tally in the second half as the First Division's bottom side bowed out at the first hurdle.

St Patrick's Athletic scored five times in the second half to see off Inchicore Athletic in a local derby at Richmond Park.

After Leon Fahy-Byrne was sent off early in the second half, goals from Darragh Markey, Jake Keegan (2), Conan Byrne and Simon Madden saw the pro side to victory.

And First Division champions elect UCD also saw off non-league opposition at the UCD Bowl as goals from Timmy Molloy and new signing Conor Davis saw them past Limerick's Pike Rovers.
