Republic of Ireland defender Marc Wilson joins Bolton Wanderers

Sky Bet Championship side Bolton Wanderers have confirmed that they have signed Irish international Marc Wilson on a one-year deal to take him to the Macron Stadium.

Capped 25 times for the Republic of Ireland having switched allegiances from Northern Ireland, the 30-year-old versatile player was previously on the books of Manchester United, Stoke City, Portsmouth, Bournemouth and West Bromwich Albion before his most recent stint at Sunderland in the 2017/18 season.

Following his relegation last term at the Stadium of Light with Sunderland, Wilson has decided to dot his name on the line as a Bolton Wanderers player for the upcoming 2018/19 Championship season.

His signature brings Bolton’s squad up to 21 as manager Phil Parkinson tries to build a squad able to compete in the Championship next season after the club’s near miss last season which almost saw the Trotters drop down to League One.

Speaking to bwfc.co.ukupon the completion of the move, the Irish international Wilson said:

“It's good to be here. I spoke to the manager a while back and he was really positive about it.

"I think for me personally it is a good chance to get playing football again and hopefully help the club to do well."

Wanderers manager Parkinson added: “We're pleased with the signing of Marc. He's a player who's played at the top level in English football and also on the international stage.

"He can play across the back four as well as holding midfield and is a great addition to our squad."

Bolton’s first game of the season is against recently relegated West Bromwich Albion on August 4 with a kick-off time of 3pm at the Hawthorns.
