Watch: Four-minute brace from substitute Conan Byrne earns Saints a first win in eight

A second-half brace from substitute Conan Byrne earned St Patrick's Athletic their first win in eight against an unfortunate but threadbare Limerick side.

Limerick's players were finally paid during the week and are still considering strike, but they didn't play like a side with the weight of the world on their shoulders in Inchicore.

The Blues led St Patrick's Athletic at the break in Richmond Park thanks to a penalty from former Pats winger Billy Dennehy, but in truth it's the least Tommy Barrett's side deserve.

A well-worked corner routine saw Darren Murphy pick out Barry Maguire inside the box and the midfielder was tackled late by Killian Brennan and referee Sean Grant awarded the penalty.

Dennehy sent Saints goalkeeper Brendan Clarke – one of two players to have swapped Limerick for Inchicore this month due to the financial situation – the wrong way.

It was all change after the break, however, and at the heart of it was the experienced winger Conan Byrne, who was introduced at the break for Killian Brennan.

Byrne first won, and then scored, a penalty to level the tie after he was clipped on the edge of the box by Murphy.

And the Dubliner completed the turnaround three minutes later as he got on the end of Simon Madden's cross from the right and headed into the bottom corner.
