Derry City and Shamrock Rovers out of Europe despite positive away results

Derry City and Shamrock Rovers both overcame the odds to post winning away scorelines after 90 minutes, but came up just short in their hunt for a Europa League second qualifying round spot.

Derry won 2-1 on the night against Dinamo Minsk in Minsk but lost the tie 3-2 on aggregate, while a 1-0 scoreline forced extra time for Rovers away to AIK but they were edged out 2-1 on aggregate.

The Candystripes travelled to Belarus with the daunting task of overturning a 2-0 deficit from the first leg at the Brandywell, but they got the ideal start.

New signing Ally Roy scored after just seven minutes at the National Olympic Stadium, but Aleksandr Sachivko levelled matters just before the half-hour.

Ronan Hale scored his first European goal to give Derry hope with 15 minutes remaining, and Derry pushed on for a third goal that would have taken them through, but Dinamo held on.

In Stockholm, the Hoops had just the one goal to rein in and they managed to do just that after 19 minutes when Dan Carr turned the ball home from a Sean Kavanagh corner.

Rovers had a chance to seal it late on when Aaron Greene headed against the post, and it was to prove costly as Nicolas Stefanelli scored in extra time as AIK squeaked through.

In the late game, Dundalk scored twice in the first half to win 2-1 on the night (report here), and 3-1 on aggregate, against Levadia Tallinn, with Michael Duffy's wonder goal the highlight.
