Damian Locke and Wexford part ways

It has been announced that Wexford FC have parted ways with manager Damian Locke.

A statement from the club stated Locke departed the club by mutual consent with his last game in charge a 3-0 defeat at home to UCD on Friday, 13 July.

“I am very disappointed to part ways with Wexford FC after 6 years,” Locke said in a statement on his Twitter account.

“Accepting the challenge to take over as manager in a difficult period for the club, my objective was always to develop our academy players for the future.

“Off the back of three good results, to having nine academy players play first team last night, I’m disappointed to not be allowed honour my commitment to the dressing room for the season.

“I’ve gained great experience and I’m excited to explore other opportunities that are being presented my way. I’d like to thank the players and my staff, wish ye all the best.”

Locke took on the position as manager in November 2016, taking over from Shane Keegan who had departed for Galway United after the club had been relegated from the Premier Division. He had been a first team coach at the club previous to taking over as manager.

Wexford finished second from bottom in the First Division last season, just two points ahead of Athlone Town in Locke’s first season in charge. Locke leaves the club with Wexford in the bottom two in the First Division again this season.

Their next fixture is a trip away to Longford Town on Saturday, 21 July (kick-off 7:30pm).
