England break penalty shoot-out hoodoo to set up World Cup quarter-final with Sweden

England broke their World Cup penalty shoot-out hoodoo to book a quarter-final date with Sweden in Samara.

The Three Lions came out the right side of penalty kicks for the first time in five attempts at a World Cup - and the first time in a major tournament since beating Spain at Euro 96.

Eric Dier buried the decisively penalty for Gareth Southgate's side after Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford had saved Carlos Bacca's spot-kick moments earlier.

Midfielder Jordan Henderson had already seen his penalty saved by Arsenal keeper David Ospina before Mateus Uriba saw his effort come back off the crossbar.

The game had finished 90 minutes after Harry Kane's penalty, awarded for a foul on the striker by Carlos Sanchez, was cancelled out by a last-minute Yerry Mina header.

Colombia had chances to win the game in extra time but, with both sides tiring after 120 minutes of intense football, a shoot-out was the only way they could be separated.

That completes the line-up for the last eight of the 2018 World Cup, which begins on Friday with the meeting of Uruguay and France in Nizhny Novgorod.
