Watch: 30 years ago today, Ray Houghton headed Ireland to Euro 88 glory against England

It's 30 years to the day since the Republic of Ireland made a lasting impact on the nation's first-ever major tournament with a shock 1-0 win over England.

Stuttgart was the venue for Ireland's first match of Euro '88 and Ray Houghton the man who made history with Ireland's first goal at a championships.

The Glasgow-born midfielder took advantage of Kenny Samson's botched clearance to nod over Peter Shilton.

Ireland hung on through the second half against a fancied English outfit on the day that Jackie's Army well and truly came into their own on the world stage.

Despite a draw with the Soviet Union in game two – having led through Ronnie Whelan's opener – Ireland fell just short of qualification from their group.

With just eight sides competing at the finals that year, the Netherlands and Soviet Union proceeded from Ireland's group straight to the semi-finals, with the Dutch being crowned champions.
