WATCH: Republic of Ireland exit U17 Championship in bizarre circumstances as goalkeeper sent off following peno save

The Republic of Ireland have been knocked out of the European Under-17 Championships in contraversial circumstances following a penalty shoot-out with the Netherlands.

With the game poised at 4-4 in the penalty shootout with one penalty to go for the Dutch, Irish keeper Jimmy Corcoran appeared to be the hero of the moment as he saved Daishawn Redan's spot-kick. 

The joy was short lived as Czech referee Zbynek Proske deemed the Irish keeper to have moved too early.

The referee then issued a second yellow card to Corcoran, having booked him earlier in the game, as his delight turned to horror as he was sent off.

The peno was re-taken with Ireland defender Oisin McEntee taking the goalkeeping jersey but Redan made no mistake on the second attempt and Ireland exit the Championship in extremely disappointing circumstances. Republic of Ireland senior manager Martin O'Neill, who was in attendance, confronted the referee at full-time as boos rang out around the ground.

In his post-match interview, head coach Colin O'Brien stated that the referee had warned both keepers about moving too early and over the shoot-out the Dutch keeper had been warned twice. A sad end to a terrific display from the young Irish players in the U17 European Championship.
