Watch: Former St Pats striker nets wondergoal in Scotland

It may not have been the finest of season’s so far in the long history of Queens Park. The oldest club in Scotland may be the owners of Hampden Park but they are by no means the current standard holders of Scottish football. Rooted to the bottom of the League One table, this proud club is facing an uncertain future.

It is rare, therefore, to receive a moment in the spotlight. Alloa Athletic reside in the play-off positions at the moment and were expected to be comfortable winners at the national stadium. In a rain and wind swept first-half, chances were at a premium and both sides entered the break at nil all.

After the break, was the moment of the match. The home keeper denied a certain goal within seconds of the beginning, and the ball was cleared upfield. Aidan Keena took hold of the ball inside his own half and looked up. Seeing a lack of support around him, but the opposition keeper off his line, a dipping and swerving forty-yard effort was unleashed into the net. Quite often moments like this are missed at this level but fortunately not on this occasion. The visitors were stunned, and Keena drew a series of free kicks as the home-side attempted to deliver a rare victory. He even tried his luck again with another dipping shot from distance which went just over.

Having started his career in Inchicore with St Patrick’s Athletic, he found himself regularly playing with the under-19 side at a prestigious age. He was called up to the first team at only seventeen years of age back in January of last year. A run in the side eventually lead to a move across the water to Hearts. There, he impressed with the underage team, eventually making his debut in November. It was felt he needed experience under his belt which led to his loan move to Queens Park. Since January, he has proven to be a spark of talent, scoring 5 goals in 7 appearances so far.

As in the case of many relegation threatened sides, a lead proved difficult to cling onto. The favourites found a chink in the home defence to provide an equaliser with a well-crafted effort not long after. The pressure told eventually. A mistake led to a concession of a winner and yet another defeat.

The futures of both club and striker are still up in the air. He is likely to return back to Tynecastle if he continues on in his scoring form. Meanwhile, his adapted club are likely to face major difficulties if and when they get relegated backed to League Two. Tuesday’s six pointer versus relegation rivals, Albion Rovers, finished in a one all stalemate. Already questions have been asked regarding their ownership and ability to play at Hampden. Hopefully this traditional club can provide the chance to develop yet another former LOI talent and to save themselves. The young can definitely help the old in this case.
