Watch: Dundalk hit Limerick for eight as the snow covers Oriel Park

Sub – zero temperatures, a snow covered pitch and an orange football. Not exactly the description you’d expect from a game played at the end of February but accurately describes the scene at Oriel Park on Tueday night where Dundalk got their season up and running with an eight goal rout of Limerick.

They put in a display which will have pleased Steven Kenny following two underwhelming 0-0 draw’s to start for the Lilywhites.

Pat Hoban got back among the goals opening the scoring inside seven minutes with a close range finish at the back post after a cross from the left by Ronan Murray.

Murray was again involved in the build up to the second goals moments later after a neat one two with Robbie Benson concluded with Murray teeing Benson up to finish low into the bottom left hand corner to put Dundalk two ahead after just ten minutes.

Hoban and Stephen Folan added another two inside the opening half to leave the Seagulls with a serious uphill battle in the second half.

The goals didn’t stop there for Dundalk and new recruit Karolis Chvedukas got in on the act connecting with a rebound that cannoned into his path after Murray hit the post to put the hosts five in front.

A Dylan Connolly goal either side of a brace from Michael Duffy meant it was an 8-0 drubbing witnessed by just over 1,800 fans.
