USA set for Dublin date with Martin O'Neill's men
The Football Association of Ireland have announced that Martin O’Neill’s senior international side will face the USA in a friendly at the Aviva Stadium on the 2nd of June this year.
The clash will be the Boys in Green's first home game at the Lansdowne Road venue since their chastening 5-1 home defeat against Denmark in the World Cup play-off, as O’Neill’s charges face away trips to both Turkey and France before facing off against the 25th ranked team in the world at the Aviva Stadium in June of 2018.
The USA also suffered some recent qualifying disappointments of their own as they failed to reach the 2018 World Cup in Russia after succumbing to defeat in controversial fashion away to Trinidad and Tobago while Panama made the most of the slip up and nicked the final CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying spot away from the grasp of the US.
That result, and ultimate failure, ended up costing the then USA National Team manager Bruce Arena his job as the 66-year-old resigned only a brief three days after the disappointment in the Caribbean.
The USA will be looking to write the wrongs of their last visit to Dublin after suffering a heavy 4-1 defeat back in 2014 as a Robbie Brady inspired Republic of Ireland blitzed an understrength Stars and Stripes side that night at the Dublin 4 venue.
Coming only a mere five days after an away trip to face France at the Stade De France, this game will act as the final warm up for the Boys in Green before they begin their inaugural campaign in the UEFA Nations League which opens up with a tough assignment away to Wales at the Cardiff City Stadium on September 6th.
The time of this clash between the Republic of Ireland the USA has still yet to be confirmed.
