The Extratime.ie Sportscast Episode 99 - Padraig Amond - Deirdre O'Shea

In episode 99 of of the Extratime.ie Sportscast, presenter Dec Marron and senior reporter Dave Donnelly dip their toes in the world of academia and speak to a man who nearly became an FA Cup hero.

The lads are joined on the show by University of Limerick research psychologist Dr Deirdre O'Shea to discuss the vexing issue of match-fixing in Irish sport.

Dr O'Shea was the co-author of a recent pan-European study on the experiences and attitudes of amateur and professional sportspeople in relation to manipulating the outcome of sporting events.

With recent cases involving Athlone Town and Bray Wanderers investigated by the FAI, it's an issue that has much relevance to the League of Ireland today.

The study's results provide an interesting insight of the pressures sportspeople find themselves under and have directly led to the development of a teaching tool for athletes by the authors.

Also joining us on the line is former Shamrock Rovers and Sligo Rovers strike Padraig Amond, who reflects on his goal that brought Newport within a few minutes of knocking out Tottenham Hotspur from the FA Cup.

He speaks about receiving praise from Mauricio Pochettino, the life of a pro footballer in the English lower leagues and why more Irish players don't try their luck on the continent, as Amond did when he left Sligo for Portuguese side Pacos de Ferreira.
