Limerick sign former Finn Harps and Galway United defender Killian Cantwell

Limerick have announced the signing of versatile defender Killian Cantwell ahead of the 2018 Premier Division season.

The 22-year-old signs for The Super Blues after spending the 2017 season playing in Donegal with Finn Harps.

“I’m delighted to sing a contract and I’m ready to go now for next week,” Cantwell told the club's official website.

“They needed somebody in as a defender and I felt I was able to step up to that stage and that’s kind of where we’re at now,” he said.

The defender spoke of his happiness at staying at a Premier Division club.

“It’s a top priority for every footballer, you want to play at the highest level you can you don’t want to drop for different reason.

“Staying in the Premier Division is something I want to keep going for the rest of my career

“It’s hard to say personally how you got on, on a personal level [last year], because the whole team went down, you can’t really say this or that, but obviously I felt I was getting fitter and stronger and I was keeping myself right.

“That’s why then when the opportunity comes to get another club at a top level you’re able to do so. I’m happy now.

“I’m hoping to fit into the team, whether it’s right-back, left back or centre-half. I’m going to push myself and hopefully do enough to get into the starting eleven.”

The Kilkenny native began his career playing for the underage sides at UCD and Waterford before joining Shane Keegan at Wexford during the 2014 season.

Cantwell moved up a division in 2015 when he signed for Galway United. Injuries restricted his playing time during his first season as a Tribesman but he did manage to play in the 2015 EA Sports Cup Final when Galway were beaten by St Patrick’s Athletic.

The defender made 25 further appearances in 2016 before moving on to Finn Harps for the 2017 season where his side eventually succumbed to relegation as Drogheda United and his former club, Galway, suffered similar fates.

A late addition to the Limerick squad, Cantwell signs just over a week away from the club’s season opener away to Sligo Rovers on Saturday, February 17th (kick-off 7:45pm).
