Striker Lee Duffy returns to Drogheda United

Drogheda United’s squad for the 2018 First Division season has risen to 15 with the return of forward Lee Duffy to the club.

The club had earlier announced the news that Luke Rossiter, a teammate of manager Tim Clancy at Bray Wanderers last season, had committed to the club for 2018.

Duffy previously played for Drogheda in the 2015 Premier Division season, after following manager Johnny McDonnell from Shelbourne to the Louth side.

He made his competitive debut in a Leinster Senior Cup game at home to Longford Town, in which he scored Drogheda's first goal of the game.

Duffy scored seven goals in 26 league appearances in 2015 but it wasn't enough to prevent the Boynesiders from being relegated away to Shamrock Rovers on the final day of the season.

Duffy made the move to Longford Town in November 2015 ahead of the 2016 but his first appearance didn't come until mid-April due to injury.

He finished the 2016 season with one goal from 11 appearances before joining First Division side Wexford in January 2017.

After scoring from the bench on his league debut away to Cobh Ramblers to rescue a point for Wexford, Duffy went on to make nine appearances in total for Wexford, three from the bench, before leaving the club in June.

Duffy has more recently been playing for Trim Celtic - the local club, and former schoolboy club, of Drogheda United manager Tim Clancy.

The new Drogheda boss gave Duffy chances to impress in the Boynesiders’ two pre-season games to date, the first being a 2-1 win over Bohemians, in which Duffy was a second half substitute.

The second of those games came on Saturday, in the Jim Malone Cup, away to Dundalk.

While Drogheda lost the game 3-1 after conceding two late goals, Duffy opened the scoring early in the first half with a stunning left-footed strike that left Gabriel Sava rooted to the spot.
