Chris Lyons joins Drogheda United from Shelbourne

Drogheda United squad for 2018 now stands at seven after the club announced the signing of forward Chris Lyons from Shelbourne.

Lyons joins Colm Deasy and Jake Hyland, who re-signed today, and Gareth McCaffrey who rejoined from Cabinteely. Sean Brennan, Kevin Farragher and Conor Kane put pen to paper on new deals earlier this week.

The forward began his League of Ireland career at UCD in 2011, scoring twice in five league appearances. He stayed with the Students for the 2012 seasons, scoring one goal in 23 league appearances.

He then made the move to Bohemians for the 2013 season, scoring four times in 20 games as Bohemians finish ninth in the Premier Division.

His stay with Bohs was a short one though as he joined Shamrock Rovers' B team for their inaugural - and only - season in the First Division.

Lyons was Rovers B’s top scorer in the First Division in 2014, finding the net six times in 20 games.

With Rovers not entering their B team into the First Division in 2015, Lyons made the move back to the Premier Division as he signed for Bray Wanderers.

He made thirty appearances in the league for the Seagulls in 2015, scoring twice, before signing for Sligo Rovers ahead of the 2016 season, managed by Dave Robertson, now director of football at Drogheda.

The 2016 season saw Lyons make just six league appearances for Sligo, scoring in a 1-1 draw against Finn Harps.

He left the club in July 2016 and looked set to join Drogheda United but instead rejoined Bray Wanderers for the remainder of the season, scoring one goal in seven games for the Seagulls.

Lyons joined Owen Heary’s Shelbourne for the 2016 First Division season, scoring in a 1-1 league draw with UCD and scoring the first in Shels’ 3-0 FAI Cup win over Waterford, both in August.
