Chris Kamara marvels in the atmosphere at yesterday's All Ireland Final

As he and Jeff Stelling reach the end of their Journey to Croker, Chris Kamara spoke to the media in Dublin today as the Sky Sports pundit reflected on his time covering our national sport.

“The atmosphere blew you away," he said.

"I have been to some big games, I have been to World Cups, Euros, all the games England have qualified for and you get some atmospheres. Cheltenham for example has the roar before the first race, but the roar before kick off yesterday was just incredible: me and Jeff couldn’t hear ourselves because of it."

Many previews before the big game stated that the country would be divided and many were going for Mayo, and it was clear Kammy had done his homework.

“I think there was quite a pull for Mayo. Early in the second half that got louder and louder and towards the end of the game the Dubs fans got in to their own right at the end.

“It is obviously different to football, but the spirit in which it is played is competitive to say the least. Tat part of it is enjoyable to say the least. I don’t think you could ever lose that in the game: the stamina, the speed and the skill is exceptional. Considering it to be an amateur sport is crazy.

“The way the game played out couldn’t have been any better, especially for the neutrals like me and Jeff were. It was end to end and for Mayo to play as well as they did and still lose is heartbreaking, when Dublin didn’t play as well as they can.”

when told of the opportunity to cover the final, he didn’t seem too sure about the sport.

“I had no idea of GAA. I have been an avid Sky Sports News watcher and it comes on but I don’t pay much attention to it and I think that worked in our favour because if we had come half-hearted knowing a little bit about it, it would have spoilt it for us.

“AIB did a great job showing us from grassroots up and sitting us next to someone as knowledgeable as Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh, I have got better with that name actually and listening to him he almost sounds like poetry.

"He has an amazing voice and his knowledge impressed me, knowing player’s families going back generations. This is more than just a game of two teams.”

Both lads have strong intentions off coming back next year so you never know what could happen.

Now in the wake of Dublin’s All-Ireland glory, fans will be able to tune in to see how the pair fared as they commentated on the Final from the top tiers of Croke Park.
