Karen Duggan scoops the top prize at the Women's National League awards

The 2015-16 Women’s National league awards took place on Wednesday afternoon at Marker Hotel where a selection of the country's best female football stars were rewarded for their performance over the past season.

After helping UCD Waves to the League Cup final and third place in the Women’s National League standings, Waves central midfielder Karen Duggan was the biggest winner on the day with the Kilkenny native fighting off competition from teammate Aine O’Gorman and Wexford Youths captain Kylie Murphy to win Player of the Year.

Another keenly contested awards saw the January/February WNL Player of the Month Roma McLaughlin piping Ireland under 19 international teammates Evelyn Daly and Keeva Keenan for the Young Player of the Year award after the Peamount United star produced several stellar performances in her first season in the Women’s National League.

For the second consecutive season, Aine O’Gorman was rewarded for her prowess in front of goal by collecting the Irish Daily Mail Golden Boot after she beat off stiff competition from Youths forward Claire O’Riordan by a single goal after the Waves forward scored 17 league goals in 12 games.

Also rewarded for their efforts throughout the year was the 2015-16 Team of the Season which consisted of three players from both Shelbourne Ladies and Wexford Youths.

Galway WFC who achieved their best league finish since entering the Women’s National League when finishing fourth place had two representatives along with UCD Waves while the final representative was selected from the ever improving Peamount United.

The Services to Women's Football Award was given to Peter Doyle, who will be presented with his award at the FAI AGM in July.
