O'Gorman lands Continental Tyres Women's National League Player of the Month for March

On Friday afternoon the FAI announced that UCD Waves and Ireland international Aine O’Gorman had won the Continental Tyres Women’s National Player of the Month for March.

The forward who was presented with her award at the Glanmire hotel in Wicklow helped the Waves to the top of the league, thanks too impressive victories against Peamount United and Galway WFC at home while the Waves  also had excellent victories on the road against both Kilkenny United and Galway WFC once again to end the month unbeaten.

The Forward, who currently leads the golden boots chart with 14 goals, will be hoping that her current form can help her to retain the award she won in 2014-15 when she pipped ex-Raheny United forward Katie McCabe by a single goal.

Speaking after collecting the award, O’Gorman explained it had been a very good month and she was delighted to score seven goals during the period.

“We had a good month of March, and won all our games which was the goal from the start.

“Once the team wins that is the main thing but to get on the scoresheet a couple of times was a nice added bonus,” O’Gorman told wnl.fai.ie.

“It’s obviously nice to get an individual award but you just want to see your team win and do well.”

As well as scoring seven goals domestically, O’Gorman played a starring role in Ireland’s impressive 5-0 victory against Montenegro before the Girls in Green came up short against group leaders Spain in Madrid.

“We always knew we had to go out and do the job against Montenegro, while we were going to be up against it facing Spain. As disappointing as the Spain result was, we are still in contention and have three big games coming up. If we win the three games, qualification is still there for us.”

Despite suffering a league defeat to Wexford Youths on Wednesday evening O’Gorman and her Waves colleagues have the opportunity to bounce back to winning ways next Wednesday when they host Galway WFC in the League Cup semi-final and the forward is looking forward to the game.

“Preparations are going well for the semi-final. We are going to have to focus on winning the remaining games of the season. The cup semi against Galway will be a great game, one we are looking forward to, and hopefully we can finish the season with a bit of silverware,” O’Gorman concluded.
